I have a general practice but specialize in using natural hormones. This includes Armour thyroid for hypothyroidism, the natural estrogens, progesterone and testosterone for signs and symptoms related to hormonal imbalance and the use of natural hydrocortisone for adrenal exhaustion. From my experience these are common conditions that can be overlooked by many physicians. The typical scenario is a patient who comes to my office presenting with one or more complaints possibly related to low thyroid. They have beenworked up by other physicians and because the physical exam and blood work are normal, they are told everything is fine. However, when asked, they have a family history of low thyroid and symptoms of fatigue, cold hands and feet, hair loss, weight gain, muscle cramps, low body temperature, constipation, depression and a host of other complaints that are indicative of low thyroid. If every other condition has been ruled out I will prescribe the Armour thyroid to the patient and the results are usually dramatic. Patients regain energy and the signs and symptoms listed above all improve. Most importantly, because they feel better, they can start making changes in their life that are conducive to physical and mental health. This means exercising, eating right most of the time or doing things for themselves that they weren’t able to do prior to thyroid replacement.

Another common complaint of my female patients are problems related to low estrogen and progesterone. Hot flashes, emotional changes, and a decreased sex drive are typical of this condition. My approach is to prescribe a combination of the natural estrogens and progesterone from a compounding pharmacy. These are bio-identical hormones, unlike the Premarin and PremPro, the types of hormones used in the Women’s Health Initiative Study and linked to multiple side effects. In using the bio-identical hormones I prescribe the dose necessary to restore the level to the patients normal or optimal levels to obtain and maintain hormone balance. In all my years of practice I have never had any major side-effects or problems prescribing the natural female hormones. Once the estrogens and progesterone are balanced testosterone can be added to the capsule. The testosterone helps prevent bone loss or osteoporosis and can improve the sex drive. In normal replacement doses it is a great adjunct to overall health and well-being.

Testosterone replacement for men has also been scientifically shown to improve and enhance general health. Increased vitality, muscle mass, sex drive and cardiovascular health are just some of its benefits. After taking a through history and checking testosterone blood levels a prescription for the natural oral testosterone will be written. If there is a history of hypertension or prostate problems, testosterone is contraindicated. Other advantages to testosterone replacement are less depression and an increase in cognitive function.
